John has practiced law in Jackson County for over 30 years. He has practiced criminal, traffic, DWI and personal injury law his entire career. So far he has had the honor of appearing and arguing before the Missouri Supreme Court three times in his career.
He is a former Missouri State Representative and served as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives until term limits ended that chapter of his life in 2010. His House district included part of Downtown Kansas City, the River Market area, and the neighborhoods of Historic Northeast where he and his family live.
He has engaged in public service throughout his career. He was a member of the Jackson County Legislature during the 1990s before being elected to the Missouri House. He served on the Bi-State Commission, as Jackson County Rep, to oversee the restoration of Union Station. Following his service in Jefferson City he was appointed to the Port Authority in Kansas City. He has served on numerous other boards and commissions.
He is a member of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, the American Association of Justice. He was awarded the Champion of Justice Award by MATA for his work championing the rights of victims and workers in the Legislature during the “Tort Reform” debates in Missouri.
He is married to Ingrid Burnett a professional educator and former member of the Kansas City School Board. They have three adult children and two grandchildren.
He is a an Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he served during the Tet Offensive.
He, his wife Ingrid and daughter Betsy are avid runners and he has completed fourteen marathons. He also enjoys bicycling and has ridden RAGBRAI twelve times since his first ride in 1993.
John is the oldest of ten children and if pressed will confess to being a text book example of the oldest child. His mother, Nadine, lives with him and Ingrid.
